An Osteopathic Treatment, What To Expect, Costs etc. Your first visit to an osteopath can be a little daunting. You are in pain, you are about to meet a stranger who will ask you lots of questions that might seem irrelevant and then will do peculiar things to you that you have heard your friends talk about, sometimes with amazement. DO NOT BE ALARMED!! Your trepidation is expected, nothing will happen to you without your consent, or without it having been explained to you. Osteopaths train for a minimum of 5 years to get their qualifications. The title ‘Osteopath’ is covered by government legislation and only fully trained, registered osteopaths are allowed to use that title.. Osteopaths are subject to rigorous controls on how they practise and are committed to continuing their training all the time to maintain their registration. You are in safe hands. Your first visit will involve a full consultation about you and your symptoms. You will be asked questions which may seem odd, but will be relevant. One of our primary rules is that we only treat people within our own levels of competency. This means if we believe we do not have the skills to help you, we will refer you to someone who can. After this consultation, you will be asked to remove some clothing and to perform some simple movements. This, combined with the osteopath’s assessment of your muscle tone, will let us come to a reasonable diagnosis of the problem. We can then agree a treatment plan and begin to carry it out. Treatment Treatment consists of loosening tight muscles and joints, maximising tissue health and reducing musculo-skeletal maintaining factors for your condition. Part of this may involve the high velocity thrust. This is a controlled, quick movement that can result in a ‘pop’ as the joint gaps. This is safe and painless, but can be a little disconcerting the first time you hear it. Other techniques involve various mechanisms to release areas of tension and restriction. Costs The first consultation takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour and cost £50. Subsequent treatments last half an hour and costs £35. The duration of your treatment will depend on your individual problem. This will be clarified with you at you first session. |
